James Swarbrick was born on the 25th April 1898 in Preston, the fifth of five children born to James and Sarah [Long] Swarbrick. In the 1911 census that James Swarbrick was living with his widowed mother, his sister Margaret and brother George at 39, Connaught Road, Preston. James was still at school at that date. George Swarbrick died in 1912 [an older brother, Richard, had died in 1889]; Ernest Swarbrick, another brother, is thought to have served with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
