George William Swarbrick was born in 1888 in Blackpool, the fifth child of ten born to Robert and Elizabeth [Lewis] Swarbrick. He was baptised on 5th August 1888 at St Paul's Church, Marton. In 1911 he was living with his parents in Blackpool and working as a professional footballer; his older brother James Swarbrick was also a professional footballer. George William played for Preston North End between 1912 and 1914, making four first team appearances and scoring two goals, both against Manchester United on 5th March 1914. Two of his other brothers also served – Thomas and Robert Lewis Swarbrick, both also in the Liverpool Regiment. The 2/8th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment had originally been formed in Liverpool in October 1914 as a second line battalion. [All three brothers played in the Battalion football team.] In February 1915 it was attached to the 171st Brigade, part of the 57th [2nd West Lancashire] Division and eventually landed in France in February 1917. Just under a year later, in January 1918, it was combined with the 1/8th Battalion.

George William Swarbrick married Henrietta Prophet in 1934 at Marton; he died in 1966.
