| NOTES: | |
| 1: | Due to restrictions placed on Catholics at the time, Joseph and Nancy had to be "legally" married in a Church of England church. Like many Catholic couples, they chose to have a Catholic ceremony as well. |
| 2: | Although today they are considered as separate names, Nancy was once a nickname for Ann, and Ann Swarbrick seems to have always been known as Nancy. |
| 3: | Nancy was 20 at the time of her marriage so, under the law at the time, she was considered a minor. |
| 4: | After Nancy's death, Joseph married Alice Jenkinson in Lancaster on 15 February 1828 and had at least one more child, another Mary, who was born on 23 September 1829. |
| 5: | The above information was taken from the registers for St Mary's Catholic Church in Great Eccleston; St Mary & St Michael's Catholic Chapel in Bonds, St Helen's Parish Church in Churchtown, and various census returns, all held at the Lancashire Archives. |
